BOISE, Idaho (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball was shut out 10-0 by Mountain West opponent Boise State in five innings on Friday afternoon at Dona Larsen Park. The Rebels drop to 18-21, 2-8 while the Broncos improve to 11-27, 3-7.
Boise State ran away with the game in the second inning with three runs to break the scoreless tie after one and a half innings. A leadoff single and a fielding error put two runners on base to start the inning. With the bases loaded after a walk, a two-out single to right field knocked in two runs. The bases were loaded again after a single, and another UNLV error allow the runner at third base to score.
The Broncos added to their lead in the third inning with a leadoff home run to left field. After a triple to left center, a hit by pitch and stolen base put two runners in scoring position. A fielder's choice to first base knocked in another run, and a sac fly to left field knocked in the third run of the inning. A two-out RBI-single to left field produced the final run of the inning.
The run-rule came into effect after the Broncos scored three more runs in the fourth inning. A RBI-triple to right field with one out scored the eighth and ninth Boise State runs of the game. The final run came on a RBI-single to second base.
UNLV only produced three hits, with two coming in the first inning. With one out Brooke Stover singled up the middle and went to third base on a two-out single to right field by Francesca Foti. The Rebels couldn't take advantage and left Stover and Foti on base with a fly out to right field.
Janine Petmecky was dealt the loss after allowing seven hits, seven runs (four earned) and one walk in three innings pitched. Alyssa Batastini pitched the fourth inning and surrendered three hits, three runs (one earned) and no walks.
The second game of the weekend series between the Rebels and Broncos will start at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
