May 19, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball program will have one of its own participate in the 2016 European Global Challenge this July in Pula, Croatia for the Mountain West All-Star Team. Ashley Owens will represent the Scarlet & Gray at the five-day tournament comprised of junior national and club teams from throughout Europe.
Owens, a rising junior from Amarillo, Texas, is one of 12 student-athletes from 10 of the 11 Conference institutions to be selected to play for Boise State head coach Shawn Garus, the 2015 MW Coach of the Year, and assistant coaches Emily Hiza (Colorado State) and Vish Djurdjevic (Nevada, Reno).
The team includes two setters, one libero, four middle blockers and five outside/opposite hitters, and it will have a three-day training session in Maribor, Slovenia that will include a number of friendly matches against national teams from the region.
Owens, a middle blocker, will be joined by Air Force's Elizabeth Pennington (OH), BSU's Sierra Nobley (OH), CSU's Kirstie Hillyer (MB/OH), Fresno State's Aleisha Coates (OH), UNR's Madison Morrell (OH), New Mexico's Carson Heilborn (S) and Victoria Spragg (MB/OPP), San Diego State's Deja Harris (MB), San Jose State's Yavianliz Rosaldo (L) and Utah State's Kayla DeCoursey (OPP) and Erica Moscoso (S).
Bring It Promotions, under the ownership of Tim Kelly, is managing the all-star trip and has been running the Global Challenge for 12 years. BIP has coordinated overseas tours since 1997. The last two Mountain West squads have each placed third in the Brijuni Division at the Global Challenge. The 2015 edition was the first instance that the Rebels were represented, as Bree Hammel and Alexis Patterson played on the team.
