June 7, 2016 LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volleyball head coach Cindy Fredrick has hired Zachary Weinberg as an assistant coach to fill the vacancy left on her staff. Most recently, Weinberg served as a graduate assistant coach at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., as well as held head coaching duties with the Maccabi USA Youth Volleyball Team.
In two years at NSU, Weinberg helped the Demons to a total of 23 wins, a Southland Conference championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth. In 2014, the squad won 16 games, five of which spanned the end of the regular season (two wins) and continued through the Southland Conference Tournament (three wins). The 2014 campaign came to an end in the first round of NCAA play against No. 2 national-seed Texas.
Weinberg's primary responsibilities at NSU were assisting head coach Sean Kiracofe, a former UNLV assistant coach, with training of setters and defensive specialists as well as off-the-court duties, such as: handling team travel, recruiting, scouting and film breakdown and exchange.
"We are excited to welcome Zach to our Rebel staff," said UNLV head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Zach brings so many of the skills and talents to our program that we are looking for in an assistant. He has coached all positions and has mastery of video and statistical programs. As an assistant to a former UNLV assistant at Northwestern State, Zach was involved in many aspects of that program. Zach will fit in well with the staff, student-athletes and athletic department at UNLV."
In April 2015, Weinberg became the head coach of the Maccabi USA Women's Youth and Open Women's Beach Volleyball team, a national team comprised of Jewish athletes. Last summer, he led the team to a pair of gold medals at the Pan-American Maccabi Games in Santiago, Chile.
The Voorhees, N.J., native began his coaching career at Ohio University with a three-year stint (Sept. 2009 to March 2012) as a student assistant coach after he initially served as a student manager (Dec. 2008 to Sept. 2009). In this stretch, the Bobcats won three MAC Tournament titles en route to three NCAA postseason trips.
Additionally, he acted as president, head coach and captain of the Ohio men's volleyball club team (Sept. 2008 to March 2012) and coached the ALETA Aces, an advanced training club team in the southeastern portion of the Buckeye State for one year.
Weinberg was tabbed the head coach at Camden Catholic High School in Cherry Hill, N.J., for a five-month term (Aug.-Dec. 2013). The Fighting Irish finished the year - its second in program history - with nine wins, eight more than in its inaugural campaign. The team claimed second place in its division with a 5-3 mark that helped it earn a berth in the New Jersey Non-Public State Tournament.
He earned his undergraduate degree in sport management from Ohio University in 2012, and received his master's degree in health and human performance with a concentration in sport administration three years later from Northwestern State.
