LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV Volleyball (1-1) was unable to overcome an early 2-0 deficit to the UC Davis Aggies (2-0) Friday night en route to a 3-1 loss at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels, who lost by set scores of 25-20, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, were paced by Mariena Hayden's double-double (10 kills and 11 digs) as well as double-figure kills from Jill Berg (13) and Elsa Descamps (12).
After falling behind 2-0, UNLV came out of the intermission and claimed the third set to stave off elimination. The Rebels carried the momentum into the fourth; however, their three-point lead at the 16-13 mark was nullified when the Aggies went on a 3-1 run to draw the teams even at 17-all. UC Davis' run eventually grew to 12-5 at the end of the match.
UNLV hit .182 for the match with 52 kills against 25 errors in 148 attack attempts. The Rebels topped out with a .297 hitting efficiency in the first set, but hit between .061 and .231 in the three subsequent sets. UC Davis hit .218 with 57 kills and 26 errors in 142 swings, and its best hitting effort came in the first with a .333 showing.
THE TURNING POINT: UC Davis, which held a 2-1 lead through three sets, overcame a three-point deficit at the 16-13 mark in the fourth by winning three of the next four points to draw even at 17-all. The Aggies pushed their run further and claimed the sixth and final lead change of the frame (18-17) and never relinquished it down the stretch.
STAT OF THE GAME: Hayden notched the first Rebel double-double of the season off a combination of 10 kills and 11 digs.
REBEL OF THE GAME: Riley Jacobs and Ashley Owens were both instrumental for the Rebels. Jacobs dished out a match-high 40 assists and added five kills off a .500 hitting efficiency. Owens had nine kills on the offensive side of the net and five total blocks (four solo) on the defensive side.
QUOTABLE: "Tonight our passing and serving struggled," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. We were right with them hitting and blocking, so we have to focus on those two things tomorrow. Our middles did well tonight; I thought Ashley played very well offensively and defensively tonight."
REBEL NOTES:
*Both Hayden and Leka Kiner-Falefa registered double digits in digs with the former notching 11 to the latter's 16, which tied for the match high.
