BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (4-7) lost in straight sets to the Indiana Hoosiers (10-0) on the first day of the Hoosier Classic, which is being contested at University Gym. The host Hoosiers won the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-17.
IU outhit UNLV by 332 points (.452 to .120), with the assistance of 18 more kills (47-29) and eight fewer errors (9-17) despite its offense attempting 16 fewer attack attempts (84-100). The Hoosiers hit .400 or better in all three sets of play and topped out at .500 in the second frame. The Rebels, on the other hand, had their best showing in the third and final stanza with a .229 efficiency.
STAT OF THE GAME: IU only committed nine errors in the match and that total was one fewer than UNLV had in the second set alone.
REBEL OF THE GAME: UNLV's Ashley Owens led the team in both kills (nine) and total blocks (four/two solo).
QUOTABLE: "We struggled offensively and defensively," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. We'll have to get more fire power from more players."
REBEL NOTES:
*This weekend's trip to the Hoosier State is the first for the UNLV volleyball program.
*With its win Friday, Indiana pulled even with UNLV in the all-time head-to-head history (1-1); the Rebels won 3-0 in 1985.
NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels return to University Gym Saturday for two matches against Florida Gulf Coast (7:00 am PT) and Samford (2:00 pm PT).
REBELS RETURN HOME: After its trip to Indiana as well as Mountain West stops in Laramie, Wyoming, and Fort Collins, Colorado, UNLV will open its portion of conference play at the Cox Pavilion on September 28 against Utah State (6:00 pm). The Rebels will host Boise State two days later (September 30)/3:00 pm).
