Rebels Bitten By Bulldogs In Tourney Finale

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (4-9) concluded its stay in Indiana with a 3-1 loss to the Samford Bulldogs (5-9) in the Hoosier Classic. Samford won the match, which was played at University Gym, by set scores of 25-17, 25-16, 16-25, 25-18.

The Bulldogs outhit the Rebels by 151 points (.266 to .115) with help of 22 more kills (57-35); however, they committed two more attack errors (23-21) in six more attack attempts (128-122). Samford hit .282 or better in all three sets that it won, but tallied a .029 in the third, a frame it lost. UNLV, on the other hand, topped out at .222 in the third, with three sub-.100 efforts in the first, second and fourth.

HOOSIER CLASSIC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM: UNLV's Elsa Descamps was named to the seven-member all-tournament team. Descamps was joined by Florida Gulf Coast's Amanda Carroll (MVP), Maggie Rick and Daniele Serrano, Indiana's Deyshia Lofton and Kendall Beerman, and Samford's Taylor Anderton.

STAT OF THE GAME: UNLV registered six or fewer attack errors in all four sets, while Samford achieved the feat in three of four â€" it had nine in the third. The Bulldogs; however, were at least plus-10 (kills minus errors) in three of the four frames. The Rebels' best differential came in the third when they were plus-6 (10-4).

REBEL OF THE GAME: UNLV's Mariena Hayden had a team-high 11 kills to go along with three aces and one assist. Defensively, Hayden added eight digs and three total blocks (one solo).

QUOTABLE: "I think we'll be glad to get back to work on Monday," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We have a lot of the season left and we have to be patient while pushing to improve."

REBEL NOTES:
*Ashley Owens moved into a tie for fourth place in the program's all-time record book for assisted blocks alongside Christel Eves (1996-99) with six assisted blocks vs. Samford. Both Owens and Eves have 331 assisted blocks. Owens sits fourth all-time in total blocks (376) and ninth in solo blocks (45).
*Saturday's match between UNLV and Samford was the first between the two programs.

NEXT FOR THE REBELS: The Rebels stay out on the road with a pair of matches in Mountain West play in Laramie, Wyoming, and Fort Collins, Colorado. UNLV will open conference play against Wyoming Thursday night (5:30 pm PT) before it faces No. 22 Colorado State Saturday (12:00 pm PT).

REBELS RETURN HOME: Following its stops in Wyoming and Colorado, UNLV will open its portion of Mountain West play at the Cox Pavilion on September 28 against Utah State (6:00 pm). The Rebels will host Boise State two days later (September 30/3:00 pm).
