BOISE, IDAHO (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV softball went toe-to-toe with the third-place team in the Mountain West on the road Friday and came out victorious in the series opener against Boise State with a 1-0 win in extra innings. Despite being no-hit through seven innings, all it took was one as senior Alyssa Navarro sent a solo shot over the wall in left center in the eighth inning to propel the Rebels to victory.

It was the second straight conference win for UNLV (23-15, 5-8) after a string of seven losses in league play. The Scarlet & Gray were able to snap a six-game winning streak by the Broncos, who had entered the weekend winners of nine of their last 10. It also marked just the 12th loss all season for Boise State (27-12, 6-4) and fourth in the Mountain West.

Senior Janine Petmecky got the start in the circle and faced a tough task against the MW's top offensive unit as the Broncos came into the game hitting at a .360 clip and leading the league in nearly every major statistical category. Petmecky was up to the challenge, pitching one of her best games of her final campaign to shut them down with eight scoreless innings. It was just the third time Boise State had been shut out all year.

Navarro made her 13th appearance in the starting lineup this season and made it count with her first home run of year. The designated player led the team in homers a year ago, so it wasn't a surprise she was able to come through with the game winner.

THE TURNING POINT: The Rebel offense had been shut down all game by Boise State freshman Gianna Mancha, who didn't allow a hit through seven innings. In the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos looked like they could come away with the walk-off win after starting the inning with two-straight singles off Petmecky. A sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with one out and the pressure was on Petmecky and the Rebel defense. First it was first baseman Mia Trejo who came up big, snagging a hard-hit grounder with the infield playing in. The Boise State runner at third had taken off thinking it was going to get past Trejo, and the freshman reacted quickly to throw it to catcher Brooke Stover, who caught the Bronco runner in a rundown for the second out. With two outs and a runner at third, Petmecky came up with a huge strikeout - her seventh of the game - to end the inning and get out of the jam. That set up Navarro's heroics in the top of the eighth, when she turned the first Rebel hit of the game into the only one they needed.

REBEL OF THE GAME: After starting the conference slate 2-5, due in part to low run support, Petmecky has bounced back with two straight hard-fought victories to move to 4-5 in league play and 15-6 overall. The right-hander was stellar Friday with her fifth shutout of the season. She allowed just six hits over eight innings and struck out seven with no walks. It seemed as if every time Petmecky was in a jam or needed to get out of an inning she came up with a big strikeout.

STAT(S) OF THE GAME: Boise State was on the verge of a no-hitter as the Rebels had zero after the first seven innings before Navarro's home run broke it up. Justine Federe immediately followed Navarro with a single for the second hit, but one was all it took.

QUOTABLE: Head coach Kristie Fox:
"Janine [Petmecky] pitched an excellent game and was really hitting her spots and mixing her speeds. The defense handled the pressure they put on us in the bottom of the seventh very well. Alyssa [Navarro] had multiple good at-bats for us in the designated player spot and in the eighth worked the count and got the pitch to drive. These close games are a great experience for us because those are the kinds of games you have to win on the road."

REBEL NOTES:
* UNLV has won two straight conference games after a seven-game league losing streak
* It was the second MW series opening win for the Rebels this season as they also beat Utah State 8-0 in five innings in game one on March 23
* The Rebel win ended a six-game winning streak by BSU, who had won nine of 10 coming into the game
* It was just the third time the high-powered Boise State offense had been shutout all year
* For the second straight game the Rebels won despite being out-hit in the game, marking just the seventh time all year that has happened
* Petmecky's 15 wins are the most by a Rebel pitcher since former UNLV pitcher Amanda Oliveto won 18 in 2013
* The home run was the ninth of Navarro's career after leading the Rebels with eight a year ago

UP NEXT FOR THE REBELS: Game two between UNLV and Boise State is set for 1 p.m. MT/12 p.m. PT. The game was originally scheduled for a 4 p.m./3 p.m. start, but was moved due to the Boise State football spring game.
