Men's Golf Freshman Aaron Jarvis Wins Latin America Amateur Championship

Jarvis' victory earns him automatic entry into the Masters, British Open, U.S. Amateur, British Amateur and the final stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open.

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) UNLV men's golf freshman Aaron Jarvis won the Latin America Amateur Championship Sunday, which earned him automatic entry into multiple major professional and amateur championships.

With the victory, the 19-year-old earned a spot in the Masters and the British Open at St. Andrews. He also is exempt into the final stage of U.S. Open qualifying.

"What Aaron accomplished today is hard to put into words," UNLV interim head coach AJ McInerney said. "I am so unbelievably proud of him. The old saying that good things happen to good people couldn't be more true here. He has invested everything he has into our program and is a true Rebel in all aspects. This is a huge day for Aaron, our program and all of our support staff who give our student-athletes opportunities to win championships."

Jarvis, who is from George Town, Cayman Islands, made birdie on the final hole in the Dominican Republic, which is where the LAAC was held, for a 3-under 69 and the win by just one shot.

"I can't even put this into words. What a day," Jarvis told the Associated Press following the round. "It means the world to me. The opportunity to go to the Masters, the British Open. There's no young golfer who doesn't dream of anything but going to those tournaments."

He will be the first player from the Cayman Islands to compete in those professional major championships and will be the first amateur player from UNLV to compete in them since Ryan Moore in the mid-2000s.

Jarvis was one behind when his second shot into the par-5 18th on the Teeth of the Dog course at Casa de Campo landed short but made it onto the green thanks to a big bounce. He two-putted for birdie, posting a 7-under 281.

Jarvis competed in three events for the Rebels during the fall season. His best showing was a tie for 48th at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nevada.
