Mamma Mia! Rebels Sweep San Diego

UNLV first baseman Mia Trejo bats in four runs in Sunday's victory

Box Score LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) — UNLV captured a sweep of San Diego with a 6-3 victory in game three of the weekend series Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.

Mia Trejo batted 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs to power UNLV's (24-6) offense. Trejo drove in Maddie Schmidt with a sacrifice fly in the first inning, then moved three across in the second when a drop-in to center was misplayed.

The Rebels put their first five runs on the board with just one hit as San Diego starter Ashley Daughtery walked eight through two innings.

"Beating any team three times is a tough thing to do when you're facing the same people over and over," UNLV head softball coach Kristie Fox said. "For us to get the key RBIs and play good defense is a good sign as we head into an important weekend.

"I still don't think we've played on all cylinders yet, so now is the time for us to peak and play our best softball."

UNLV starter Alanna Thiede (W, 6-1) struck out four and allowed three hits through three innings, but found the bases loaded in the fourth after two hits and a late attempt by the defense to tag out a runner at home. Jenny Bressler popped into the circle and threw back-to-back strikeouts to escape the inning. Bressler earned her 10th career save, one shy of matching UNLV's career record.

"Our pitchers did a great job of being focused and ready all weekend, knowing we might call their name at any time. Getting up to 21 innings with two pitchers, we knew we would have to smartly pick our spots to make pitching changes.

"Jenny did a great job attacking them and taking advantage of their weaknesses. Those two strikeouts were huge just to shut down their momentum for the rest of the game."

Trejo added the fourth RBI to her total with a solo home run in the sixth. It was her sixth roundtripper of the season and 27th of her career, moving her into a tie for 11th all-time at UNLV.

UNLV hits the road this weekend for a three-game series versus conference leaders Boise State (27-5, 6-0 Mountain West).
