LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV softball has officially signed four players to the 2024 incoming class, head coach
Kristie Fox announced today.
The group - Gwyn Burnett, Jazmine Chavez, Samantha Hatzenbeller and Yanina Sherwood - will join the Rebels next fall after signing national letters of intent during the first week of the signing period. UNLV deepens the bullpen and brings in two outfielders with power at the plate.
Gwyn Burnett | L/R | OF, SS, 2B | Llano, Texas
Burnett has been a three-year letterwinner at Llano High School under head coach Beau Burnett, where she helped the Yellowjackets to three Class 3A Region Bi District Softball championships. She is a three-time Class 3A Texas Girls Coaches Association and Sportswriters Association All-State shortstop selectee. During her sophomore campaign she was named the 2022 All District Co-Offensive and Co-Defensive player of the year. Additionally, Burnett garnered the 2021 All District Newcomer of the Year accolade and was named to the 2021 District 25-3A All-District first team her freshman season. She also lettered in basketball, cross country and track, as well as powerlifting. Burnett comes from an athletic family as her mom Barbara, played collegiate softball and soccer and her dad Beau, played collegiate football. In addition, her aunts Maria and Kali, also played collegiate softball and soccer, and her cousin Marshall is currently a football player at Wisconsin Lutheran University. She plans to major in event design and management at UNLV.
Jazmine Chavez | R/R | P | Eastvale, Calif.
Chavez has been a three-year letterwinner at Eleanor Roosevelt High School under head coach Heidi Oberdank. The right-handed pitcher collected 41 strikeouts through 41.2 innings pitched last season. Chavez is the starting pitcher for the Corona Angels Slye and helped the 14U squad to a 2021 Alliance National Championship. She plans to major in architecture and interior design at UNLV.
Samantha Hatzenbeller | R/R | OF | Meridian, Idaho
Hatzenbeller, the 2023 Gatorade Idaho Player of the Year, will come to UNLV from Owyhee High School where she has been a three-year letterwinner. Hatzenbeller is the first Gatorade Idaho Softball Player of the Year to be chosen from Owyhee. She has helped Owyhee to back-to-back District Championships and a State Championships during the 2022-23 season. The 5-foot-5 outfielder went 9-for-16 with four doubles, three home runs and seven RBI in the 5A state tournament. Hatzenbeller is a two-time All-Conference and All-State first team selection and the 2023 Max Preps Idaho Softball Player of the Year. During her junior campaign, Hatzenbeller batted .510 with 53 RBI, 16 home runs and 49 runs scored. She also tallied All-Conference second team honors as a pitcher during her sophomore season. Hatzenbeller plays club ball with Crossfire Fastpitch Dwyer and helped the squad to back-to-back USA State championships and the 18U Alliance Supercup NW Championships. She also has lettered in volleyball her freshman and sophomore years. She plans to major in business administration at UNLV.
Yanina Sherwood | R/R | P | Bothell, Wash.
Sherwood, a 5-foot-11 right-handed pitcher, is a three-time 4A All-Wesco and All-Area first team selection out of Henry M. Jackson High School, where she has been a three-year letter winner under head coach Kyle Peacocke. Sherwood had a dominant junior campaign in the circle where she tallied 255 strikeouts and a 0.55 ERA and held batters to a .141 average against her. She relinquished just 13 earned runs for the season and helped Jackson to a 24-1 overall record and a 2023 Class 4A state championship. Sherwood's 24-1 record marked the best in school history. During the 2023 season, Sherwood garnered Wesco Player of the Year, SBLive Washington All-State Player of the Year, Maxpreps Washington Player of the Year, Everett Herald Softball All-Area Player of the Year, SBLive National Softball Player of the Year and Maxpreps All-American first team honors. Sherwood also plays club ball for the ai Bandits Breer and was dominant in the circle and helped them to a 2023 Triple Crown World Series Championship. She also has national team experience with the Peruvian National Team and played in the U18 Women's World Cup in Lima, Peru. She additionally is a three-year letterwinner. Sherwood plans to major in civil engineering at UNLV.
