Maria Fernanda Martinez To Transfer To Women's Golf Program From Oklahoma

The Alvarado, Mexico native will join the Rebels along with her sister Maria Jose Martinez

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women's golf program has received a signed commitment from Oklahoma transfer Maria Fernanda Martinez for the 2023-24 season, head coach Amy Bush-Herzer announced Friday.

A native of Alvarado, Mexico, Martinez will join the Rebels along with her sister Maria Jose, who signed with the Scarlet & Gray in January. She spent four years with the Sooners, recording a 74.45 scoring average, an 18-hole low of 66 and a 54-hole low of 215 in that span.

"We're excited to add Maria Fernanda to our UNLV family," said Bush-Herzer. "She brings a breadth of international and college golf experience to the program. It will be a lot of fun having her and her sister Maria Jose compete as Rebels this fall."

A three-time All-Big 12 Academic Team honoree, Martinez recorded one top-10 finish and four top-20 finishes during her time in Norman. Her highest finish came when she tied for sixth at the Olde Stone Intercollegiate in 2021.

During the 2022 spring season, Martinez's year culminated in the postseason with a tied-for-32nd showing at the Big 12 Championship and a 54th-place outing at the NCAA Albuquerque Regional.

Before starting her collegiate career, Martinez placed third at the Mexican Women's Amateur and 11th at the Youth Olympic Games as a member of the Mexican National Team in 2018. Additionally, she qualified for the U.S. Girls Junior Championship in 2015, 2016 and 2018, taking 33rd in the latter.
