Volleyball Wins Record Eighth-Straight Match

October 10, 1998

TULSA, Okla. - Led by junior Angie Sylvas' double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs, the UNLV volleyball team defeated Tulsa 17-15, 15-13, 15-10 in a Western Athletic Conference match Saturday at Mabee Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Tulsa.

The victory was the eighth-in-a-row for the Rebels, setting the program record for most consecutive victories. The previous mark was seven set in 1984.

Sophomore Justine Kamelamela also added a double-double of 14 kills and 10 digs as UNLV improved its record to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in WAC play. Junior Danielle Gerlach assisted UNLV in the win with 10 kills, while senior Meri-de Boyer recorded a match-high 48 assists.

With the win, the Rebels equaled their win total of the last two years combined. UNLV won five matches in 1996, its first season after 11 years off, and won nine matches in 1997.

UNLV's three WAC wins eclipses last year's total of two as UNLV was 2-14 in conference play last season.

Tulsa (8-6, 1-3 WAC) was led by sophomore Kristien Van Lierop's 14 kills and 18 digs.

The Rebels out-hit the Golden Hurricane .271 to .164 for the match and recorded 59 kills to TU's 42.

UNLV's next action will be Thursday, Oct. 15 as it hosts SMU in a WAC match at 7:00 p.m. at Lied Gymnasium.
