Volleyball Defeats Louisville At Maryland Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Led by Angie Sylvas? double-double of 21 kills and 17 digs, the UNLV volleyball team defeated Louisville 15-4, 12-15, 15-8, 13-15, 15-12 at the Maryland Tournament played at Ritchie Coliseum Friday.

Sylvas led all players in digs and kills, while Justine Kamelamela also turned in a double-double with 16 kills and 13 digs for UNLV (4-0). Two other Rebels had double figures in kills as Jeanette Graves recorded 17 and Amber Graham had 12.

Christel Eves had 15 digs, while Nora Bernson was also in double figures with 12. Robyn Shea and Julia Goes split time at the setter position recording 25 and 20 assists, respectively.

Sonja Percan and Kelly McClain each had a team-high 19 kills for Louisville (2-3). McClain led the team in digs with 16, while Emily Roberson turned in 45 assists.

The Rebels raced out to a 6-0 lead off Robyn Shea?s first serve and after Louisville got on the board at 6-1, UNLV increased the advantage to 11-1. The Cardinals got no closer than 12-4 as UNLV cruised to win the first game 15-4.

In game two, Louisville held an early 5-1 advantage. After UNLV tied the score at 5-5, the Cardinals scored six straight points on Emily Roberson's serve to make it 11-5. Trailing 13-5, the Rebels climbed back into the game by making the score 13-9, then 14-12 before falling 15-12.

UNLV led 8-3 early in game three as Louisville cut the deficit to two points at 10-8. The Rebels scored the final five points of the game to take a 2-1 advantage in the match by winning the third game 15-8.

The Rebels scored the first seven points of game four and led 9-2 as Louisville fought back into it, eventually taking an 11-10 lead. Tied 13-13, Louisville scored the final two points of the game to win 15-13.

In the rally-scoring and deciding game five, UNLV trailed early 4-1. The Rebels then scored the next four points to take a 6-4 lead. The score was tied 8-8 as the Rebels again scored four straight points to lead 12-8. UNLV increased its advantage to 14-9, however the Cardinals cut it to 14-12 before Sylvas? final kill ended the match.

UNLV will continue play in the Maryland Tournament on Saturday with a 2:30 p.m. EDT match against Rutgers and conclude with Maryland at 7:30 p.m.
