Volleyball Opens Season With Two Wins

LAS VEGAS - The UNLV volleyball team opened its season with two wins at the Official All-Star Cafe/UNLV Volleyball Classic at Lied Gymnasium Friday.

In the first match of the classic, the Rebels (2-0) defeated UMKC (0-2) 15-9, 15-3, 15-5 to record their first victory of the season in their first try.

Senior Christel Eves turned in a stellar performance in the match leading all players with 10 kills and recording a hitting percentage of .692. Senior Jeanette Graves added 9 kills, while junior Justine Kamelamela had 8. Senior Danielle Gerlach led all players in digs with 8. Junior Robyn Shea recorded 28 assists.

UMKC was led by senior Angie Johanningmeier's 8 kills.

In its second match of the day, UNLV downed Iowa State (1-1) 15-11, 15-4, 15-6.

Senior Angie Sylvas and Kamelamela each led all players with 14 kills. Shea recorded a match-high 43 assists, while Sylvas added a team-high 7 digs.

Senior Sheila Lopez and junior Stacy Nicks led Iowa State with 9 kills each.

In the classic's second match, Iowa State defeated Southern Illinois (0-1) 15-11, 15-11, 4-15, 15-13.

The classic will conclude Saturday with Southern Illinois against UMKC at 12:00 p.m., UMKC vs. Iowa State at 3:00 p.m., and Southern Illinois vs. UNLV at 6:00 p.m.
