LAS VEGAS - UNLV (9-8, 5-1 MWC) used a quick three-game victory over TCU (12-8, 2-4 MWC) to push its winning streak to a season-best four-games Friday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels have been on fire with only one blemish in their last seven games. UNLV took their only match of the weekend with scores of 30-21, 30-24, 30-23. With the win, UNLV takes over sole possession of second-place in the Mountain West with a half-game lead over idle Colorado State.
UNLV out hit TCU 45-to-37 in the kill department and .208-to-.152 in hitting percentage. The Rebels hit higher than .186 in all three of their games, while TCU was held under .128 twice. The Rebels were led on the offensive by Lauren Miramontes for the third-straight match. Miramontes was the lone attacker in the match to break double-digits in kills, as she had 15. Miramontes had the highest hitting percentage as well, with a .324 average. Michelle Banks nearly hit double-digits as she finished with nine kills, while Kortney Reid and Maria Aladjova had seven apiece. Reid's seven kills are a season- and career-high for the redshirt freshman. Melody Nua threw the ball up for 40 of UNLV's 43 assisted kills.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jada Walker stopped 16 of TCU's attacks and Nua had six (one solo) of UNLV's 16 total blocks.
The Horned Frogs had three players with eight or more kills, but none reached double-figures. Hayley Harmon led the team with nine kills and was followed by eight from Nirelle Hampton and Anna Vaughn apiece. Hampton helped setup some attacks as well, as she tallied 23 assists. Talaya Whitfield (20) and Vaughn (10) dug out 30 of 49 attacks from UNLV.
Up next for UNLV is a three-match week with all contests taking place away from the friendly confines of the Cox Pavilion. On Monday night, the Rebels travel north with a match against in-state rival Nevada, Reno. On the 7th and 8th, UNLV heads east for conference matches against Utah and BYU, respectively.
