Aug. 27, 2010

Final Stats

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV Rebels (0-1) dropped a 3-0 decision (23-25, 20-25, 18-25) to the 25th-ranked Saint Mary's Gaels (1-0) Friday afternoon in the Long Beach State Baden Classic played in the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State University. UNLV played Saint Mary's closely in the first set with multiple lead changes and ties, but ultimately succumbed to its opponent in straight sets.

The Rebels opened the match with the first three points following consecutive kills from Kendra Glendenning and Amanda Alles and an ace by Madeline Westman. The Gaels fought back to tie the score at 4-4 before building as much as a five-point lead on two different occasions with the last coming at the 21-16 juncture. UNLV rattled off seven of the next nine points to pull even at 23 for the set's eighth tie. SMC then won the final two points off of a kill by its own Lauren Corp and an errant Rebel attack.

SMC kept the pedal down in the second set taking a quick 3-0 lead before owning multiple four-point cushions for most of the frame. The Gaels eventually pushed out to a six-point differential twice with the final one coming at the stanza's end, 25-19.

The third set was similar to the second in that UNLV had to play from behind from the get-go. SMC jumped out 3-0 before owning a 6-1 edge early. UNLV pulled within two multiple times, but it wasn't enough as the Gaels slowly increased its lead to as much as seven.

Alles was one of the top performers for UNLV, as she collected 11 assists, eight digs and six kills. Alles' dig and kill figures were career bests.

The Rebels were led offensively by Kelsey Keeler's nine kills. Sara Nehf and Westman joined Alles in following Keeler's output with six kills apiece.

Westman led UNLV in hitting with her .312 tally after committing only one error in 16 attempts.

Glendenning and Alles split the setting duties with the Rebels playing a 6-2 system. Both notched double-digit tallies, as Glendenning dished out 17 helpers to Alles' 11.

Defensively, Kela Lau Hee amassed a match-high 20 digs.

SMC had three players amass double-doubles in the match with two going the kill-dig route, while a third combined assists and digs. Megan York tallied match-highs in kills (15), hitting efficiency (.424) and digs (19). Lauren Corp followed York's lead with a 12-kill, 11-dig effort. Missy White rounded out the trio of those with double-doubles when she paired her 25 assists and 10 digs.

UNLV returns to action Friday night at 7:00 pm, when they face the host Long Beach State 49ers, who sit one spot outside of the 2010 AVCA Top 25 Preseason Poll.
