Oct. 11, 2014 Box Score LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team improved to 15-5 on the year and 3-2 in the Mountain West with its 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-23, 25-20) of the visiting New Mexico Lobos (11-7, 4-2 MW) at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels won Saturday's slugfest - in front of 876 rowdy fans - behind strong defensive play and a double-double from Alexis Patterson.
The triumph was the 11th for the Scarlet & Gray by a 3-0 margin and helped push their home record to 7-2 in 2014.
The Rebels outhit the Lobos .185 to .133 in the contest despite committing six more errors (24-18). On the plus side, they owned advantages in both kills (49-35) and total attempts (135-128). The home squad was able to overcome a total of 21 errors between the first two frames that led to .114 and .091 hitting efficiencies in sets one and two, respectively. The third was a better representation of the Rebel offense with 19 kills against three errors for a .340 showing. UNM, on the other hand, wasn't able to surpass the .188 barrier with averages at or below that figure in each stanza. The Lobos; however, only maxed out at eight errors in the middle set.
"This was an amazing defensive battle," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our kids showed us much hustle and flat out persistence all night. Our offensive performance was a little below average, but our blocking and defense were game changers. It was a wonderful team win over a very good New Mexico team."
Patterson notched her sixth double-double of the year and second in a row with help from a pairing of a match-best 36 assists and 11 digs. Besides the aforementioned numbers, she also had five kills, three assisted blocks and one ace.
Alyssa Wing paced the Rebel attackers with a team-high 10 kills and chipped in three assisted blocks (one solo) and a dig.
Daryn Glenn and Katlin Winters followed closely behind Wing's output with nine kills of their own. Glenn fell one kill shy a double-double after collecting 12 digs, two assists and one assisted block. Winters led all hitters with a .467 hitting effort with only two errors in 15 swings. She added two assisted blocks and one dig.
Bree Hammel was a force on both sides of the net with eight kills and an ace on the offensive end to match seven total blocks (two solo) and two digs defensively.
Ceannia Kincade, too, was instrumental as a two-way player with eight kills to go along with nine digs, three total blocks (one solo) and two assists.
In all, UNLV had four players register double figures in digs. Allison Davies led the quartet with 17, while Carly Riehl had 13 of her own.
Chantale Riddle paced the Lobos in a losing effort with a double-double of her own. Riddle had a team-best 11 kills and 11 digs to achieve the feat. She also added three assisted blocks and two assists.
UNM's Hannah Johnson and Lise Rugland split the setting duties, as the duo dished out 19 and 11 assists, respectively.
The visitors from Albuquerque, N.M., got team bests in digs (14) from Maddie Mayfield and blocks (eight total) from Skye Gullatt.
UNLV heads back out on the road for four matches in a 10-day span next week beginning with stops in San Jose, Calif., and Reno, Nev. The Rebels and Spartans of San Jose State serve get the expedition started on Thursday, Oct. 16 (6:00 pm). The trip to the northern portion of the Silver State will signal the start of the 2014-15 Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. The Scarlet & Gray has been victorious in the two previous Series with the help of season sweeps by the Rebel volleyball team.
