Rebels Triumph Over The Spartans In Straight Sets

Box Score: UNLV 3, San José State 0 SAN JOSE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team began its stretch of three road matches in five days Thursday evening the right way with a 3-0 sweep (25-12, 25-18, 25-23) of the San José Spartans at Spartan Gym. The Rebels, backed by their 12th win in three sets, upped their record to 16-5 on the year and 4-2 in the Mountain West. With the loss, SJSU sits 3-16 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

The Scarlet & Gray outhit the Spartans .330 to .133 with help from a seven-kill advantage (42-35) and 10 fewer errors (11-21). The Rebels opened up the match with .424 and .357 hitting efficiencies in the first and second sets, respectively, as they combined to register 30 kills and six errors in 61 attempts. The visitors stalled a bit coming out of intermission with a .212 effort in the third with 12 kills countered by five errors in 33 swings. SJSU, on the other hand, committed at least five errors in every frame and topped out with a team-high .182 average in the second set.

UNLV was paced offensively by three hitters who had nine kills apiece and at least a .304 hitting efficiency. Bree Hammel topped all hitters with a match-best .444 clip with nine kills against one error in 18 swings. Ceannia Kincade threw down nine kills at a .368 pace and also added two assists, two digs and one assisted block. Daryn Glenn notched her nine kills off a .304 display, while adding eight digs, three assisted blocks, two assists and one ace.

Alexis Patterson dished out a match-high 29 assists and also chipped in five digs, four kills, two assisted blocks and an ace.

Allison Davies registered 13 digs, which were the most in the affair.

"This was not our best night passing and blocking, but we took care of the ball on offense," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We got solid hitting from everyone and that was the difference in the match."

The Spartans had a pair of their own reach double figures in kills with 14 and 12 from Nandyala Gama and Tyanna Roy, respectively. The squad's setting duties were split between Allison Meehan and Breann Robinson with the former assisting on 18 kills compared to 10 by the latter.

The Rebels return to the Silver State for their next match, which will take place Saturday up north against in-state rival Nevada, Reno. The matinee (1:00 pm) signifies the start of the 2014-15 Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and sponsored by Barrick Gold. Dating back to 2006, UNLV has won 10 straight matches against UNR with five of those triumphs taking place in Reno.

NOTES: UNLV improved to 16-0 this season when it holds an opponent to a .171 or lower hitting efficiency ... With the 3-set win, UNLV improved to 12-2 in matches of that duration ... With the first-set win, UNLV improved to 16-5 in the opening stanza, which has led to a 14-2 record - and 53-10 in the Fredrick Era (2011-present) - when it carries a 1-0 lead into set two ... With wins in sets one and two, UNLV improved to 12-1 on the year - and 42-1 in the Fredrick Era - when it carries a 2-0 lead into intermission.
