Rebel Offense Overpowers Spartans

Nov. 15, 2014

Box Score: UNLV 3, San José State 0

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - With its 3-0 sweep of the San José State Spartans Saturday night, the UNLV volleyball team tied the program's single-season records for most overall (24) and conference victories (12) previously set by the 2007 squad that won the Mountain West Championship en route to an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Rebels, who won the contest behind set scores of 25-15, 25-14, 25-17, were led by double-digit kill outings from Bree Hammel, Katlin Winters and Daryn Glenn at the Cox Pavilion.

With the win, the Scarlet & Gray pushed its overall record to 24-6, which sits tied with the '07 edition for the best account through 30 matches. The Rebels' MW mark moved to 12-3 and keeps the team in second place in the conference. SJSU dropped to 4-24 for the year and 1-14 in league action.

"Our back row set the tone with spot on passing tonight, which gave Alexis (Patterson) all kinds of options," said head coach Cindy Fredrick, who sits one win shy of 500 for her career. "All of our hitters took great swings tonight. This was a solid performance for us."

The Rebels outhit the Spartans by .302 points (.432-.130), which marked the fourth instance they've held at least a .300 or greater hitting efficiency differential over an opponent this season. The hosts threw down 18 more kills (48-30) despite the visitors' advantage in attack attempts (92-88). UNLV opened up the contest with an astonishing .593 hitting display with 18 kills against two kills in 27 swings. That output was followed by a .423 (14-3-26) effort in the second and a .314 (16-5-35) clip in the third stanzas. The Spartans, on the other hand, had 10 kills in each frame, but committed between four to eight errors along the way with .250, .057 and .121 set averages.

Hammel had match highs in kills (11), hitting (.714) and total blocks (five assisted). Her .714 display - a season and career high - was a result of 11 kills and one error in 14 attempts.

Winters and Glenn followed closely behind with 10 kills apiece. The former hit .625 (10-0-16) and had one assisted block to the latter's .450 (10-1-20) average, seven digs, three assists and two assisted blocks.

Alexis Patterson dished out a match-best 36 assists to go along with five kills and .500 (6-1-10) hitting. Patterson added three digs and one assisted block on the defensive side of the net.

Allison Davies was the only player in the match to crack the double-digit barrier in digs with 10.

SJSU was paced by nine kills from Nandyala Gama. Allison Meehan had a team-best 20 assists and tied for the team lead in digs with six.

A trip to Logan, Utah for a midweek tilt against the Utah State Aggies Wednesday (8:30 pm MT/7:30 pm PT) is next on the Rebel to-do list. The USU match will signal the conclusion of UNLV's road trips for the remainder of the regular season. Two home matches on Nov. 22 and 25 against Boise State and San Diego State, respectively, will follow the trek to the Beehive State.
