Rebels Top Western Kentucky In Three Sets

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team improved to 1-1 on the first day of the 2014 season with help from its 3-0 sweep of the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers (1-1) at the Cox Pavilion. UNLV won the match behind set scores of 25-19, 25-20, 25-20 on day one of its own Invitational.

The Rebels hit at a .279 pace with three sets of .194 or better averages. The team cranked out an impressive .467 hitting efficiency in the opening frame with 15 kills and only one error in 30 attempts. The Lady Toppers, on the other hand, only mustered a .130 effort with two stanzas at or below .104. Overall, the Scarlet & Gray amassed one more kill (41-40) and 13 less errors (12-25) off 11 fewer attempts (104-115).

"I thought the energy of our team was outstanding tonight," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our defense played very well and the difference in the match was the hitting and blocking from Bree and Katlin."

Bree Hammel paced the Rebels behind career and match highs in kills (12), hitting efficiency (.632) and blocks (seven assisted). Hammel also chipped in her first career ace and one dig.

UNLV offense also got eight kills apiece from Katlin Winters and Daryn Glenn. The former tallied a .615 hitting clip to go along with four blocks (one solo) to the latter's six digs and three blocks (all assisted).

Alexis Patterson dished out 34 assists and also contributed six digs, three blocks (all assisted), two kills and one ace.

Defensively, Carly Riehl and Allison Davies led the Rebels defensively with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Lady Toppers' Haley Bodway had team bests in kills (nine) and hitting (.375). Leading WKU in assists was Jessica Lucas, who had 32. Kaelin Grimes (14) and Georgia O'Connell (11) notched double digits in the match.

UNLV returns to action Saturday with a pair of contests against UC Riverside at 11:00 am and Cal State Northridge at 6:30 pm. In between those two matches will be a meeting between CSUN and WKU at 1:30 pm.

NOTES: In UNLV's career record book, Glenn moved seventh place in total attempts (2,423) and Winters broke into the top 10 in assisted blocks (193).
