Rebels Powerful Attack Sinks The Privateers

CONWAY, Ark. (UNLVRebels.com) - For the second time Friday the UNLV volleyball team (10-3) won a contest by a 3-0 decision at Central Arkansas' Sugar Bear Invitational held at the Prince Center. Just hours after defeating Grambling in straight sets, the Rebels dispatched the New Orleans Privateers in similar fashion with scores of 25-16, 25-12, 25-13.

The Scarlet & Gray, who has won three straight matches and eight of its past nine, has played in 10 affairs that resulted in 3-0 outcomes and a 9-1 record this season.

The 10-3 start is tied for the second-best showing with the 1998 edition to kick off a campaign in program history. That record is only bested by the 11-2 beginning by the 2007 squad that went on to win the Mountain West Championship and played in the NCAA Tournament.

UNLV outhit UNO .419 to .012 with help from an advantage of 24 kills (45-21) and 11 less errors (9-20) in only one more attack attempt (86-85). The Rebels unleashed a pair of .500 or better hitting efficiencies in the first two sets - .500 first set and .522 second set - before it closed out the match with a .286 effort. The Privateers opened up with a .200 clip and before their hitters went south with two dismal performances in the second (-.087) and third (-.094) stanzas.

Alyssa Wing was the lone performer to reach double digits in kills with a match-high 11. Besides her kills output, Wing registered career bests in both hitting (.625), digs (eight) and assists (two).

Three more Rebels - Daryn Glenn, Katlin Winters and Bree Hammel - loomed large on both sides of the net. Glenn had eight kills off a .300 day of hitting and eight digs. Winters went errorless with seven kills in eight attempts for a career-best .875 display of hitting. Hammel hit .385 and produced seven kills to go along with five assisted blocks, one assist and one ace.

Alexis Patterson led all players with 32 assists and also chipped in five digs, three kills, three assisted blocks and two aces.

Allison Davies topped all with a match-best 12 digs.

NOTES: Dating back to the rebirth of the volleyball program in 1996, UNLV has had four seasons where a team has played nine or more three-set matches in its first 13 contests ... The 2014 team (8-1) is tied with the 1999 (6-3) and 2003 editions (3-6) for second place, while the 2000 squad (0-11) leads the way with 11 ... UNLV has won the first set in 11 of its 13 matches and owns a 10-1 mark when winning the opening frame ... UNLV has won the first two sets in nine of its 13 matches and owns an 8-1 mark when taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission ... In the Fredrick Era (2011-present), UNLV owns records of 47-10 when it wins the first set and 38-1 when it wins the second set ... In UNLV's career record book, Davies sits one set shy of tying Nicki King (2001-04) for 10th place with 384 and Glenn sits eight kills shy of trying Angie Sylvas (1997-99) for eight place with 912.
