Sept. 23, 2014 Box Score: UNLV 3, Southern Utah 0
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (12-3) returned to the Cox Pavilion for its first home match in nearly a month Tuesday and walked away with its ninth three-set victory of the season in the process. The Rebels made quick work of the Southern Utah Thunderbirds (7-4) in a contest that signaled the conclusion of the Scarlet & Gray's non-conference season.
Not only was the triumph the fifth straight for the Rebels, but it was their 10th win in 11 outings. More impressively, the W keeps the 2014 edition knotted with the 2007 squad for the best start through 15 matches.
UNLV outhit SUU .368 to .096 with the assistance of 14 fewer errors (8-22) in nine less attack attempts (95-104). The home side threw down 11 more kills (43-32) with 32 occurring over the first two sets - 16 in each one. The Rebels opened up with a .256 showing before they unleashed staggering efforts of .438 and .458 in the subsequent sets. They only registered two errors in those final frames.
The Thunderbirds, meanwhile, topped out in set two with a .138 clip, but they only mustered up .100 and .057 outputs in the first and third stanzas, respectively.
The Rebels were paced by Daryn Glenn, who racked up her fourth double-double of the season with a combination of 10 kills and 12 digs. Glenn hit at a .368 average and chipped in three assisted blocks and one assist to go along with her match highs in kills and digs.
Alyssa Wing, like Glenn, threw down 10 kills, but fell one dig shy of a double-double with nine. Wing was able to register two total blocks, including one of the solo variety.
Katlin Winters and Bree Hammel followed closely behind their teammates in kills with nine and eight of their own, respectively. Winters, who had three assisted blocks, cranked out a match-best .692 hitting performance without committing an error in 13 tries. Hammel led all at the net with four total blocks (one solo), while adding three digs and a pair of aces.
"Our blocking started slow tonight, but the team picked it up in the third set," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. I like the balance in the hitting and thought Katlin stood out with no errors. Our hitters are taking care of the ball and that's key for us."
Alexis Patterson dished out a match-high 31 assists. Patterson added four digs, two total blocks (one solo) and a kill.
SUU was led statistically by Madi Forsythe in kills (seven), Faith Ma'afala in assists (25) and Sariah Pelaez in digs (17).
The Rebels will play once more at the Cox Pavilion Thursday night at 6:00 pm against the Fresno State Bulldogs. The match signifies the start of the Mountain West season for both sides and it will be streamed online in conjunction with the Mountain West Network. The evening is billed as Social Media & Student Night with fans being able to purchase tickets for $2 in advance of the match through UNLVTickets.com.
