LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team (10-6 overall, 3-1 Mountain West) extended its home winning streak to nine matches with its 3-1 victory (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-16) over the San Diego State Aztecs (4-13, 1-4 MW) Thursday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Rebels, who have now won three straight against SDSU, was paced by a double-double from Alexis Patterson and 14-kill efforts from Bree Hammel and Sadie Stutzman.
Coincidentally, the nine-match winning streak, began with a 3-1 triumph in the 2014 home finale against the Aztecs on Nov. 25. Eight of the nine wins have occurred this season.
UNLV outhit SDSU by 125 points (.242 to .117) in the contest, although both sides recorded 52 kills. The Aztecs attempted nine more attacks (162-153), but also committed 18 more errors (33-15) in the process. The Rebels hit .250 or better in all three of their set wins, including a high of .378 in the first; however, they registered a lackluster .098 in the third-set loss. The visitors, on the other hand, topped out at .192 in the third after showings of .150 and .148 in the first and second, respectively. They followed their lone win with a paltry -.023 effort in the fourth and final stanza.
In the bout, the Rebels had a total of 12.0 team blocks with five of those coming in the fourth. Six different players had a hand in at least one block with Hammel present for four of them (one solo and three assisted).
"I think our blocking was pretty decent, but our passing -- on our side -- was really good, so it kept us moving offensively," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "Our blocking is always what keeps us in the game."
Patterson notched her seventh double-double of the season behind a combination of a match-high 39 assists and 10 digs. She also chipped in three kills and three assisted blocks.
Stutzman and Hammel hit .364 and .306, respectively, en route to accumulating 14 kills apiece. The former added nine digs, two assisted blocks, one assist and one ace to the latter's seven total blocks (one solo).
Ceannia Kincade, Ashley Owens and Alyssa Wing were also instrumental on both sides of the net in the win. Kincade contributed offensively with six kills and one assist and defensively with 15 digs and five assists. Owens provided eight kills off .375 hitting and five assisted blocks, while Wing went with seven kills and 11 digs.
Carly Riehl roamed the back row and produced a match-high tying 23 digs as well as one ace.
SDSU's Hailey Jones had her squads only double-double with 26 assists and 10 digs. Jones and Lauren Utchen split the setting duties with the latter dishing out 18 assists of her own. The duo helped Danielle Bolden (14 kills), Deja Harris (12) and Baylee Little (11) notch double digits in kills. Their teammate Devyn Pritchard tied Riehl for the match-high in digs with 23.
UNLV closes out its short homestand Saturday at 1:00 pm against in-state rival Nevada, Reno. The Rebels, who have won 12 straight in the head-to-head series, and Wolf Pack will be playing for points that will factor in the Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold -- an all-encompassing series between the Silver State's NCAA Division I programs. The Rebels have won the first three iterations of the Series.
NOTES: With help from her seven total blocks, Hammel moved up in two of the program's career records; she is now seventh in assisted blocks (226) and 10th in solo blocks (36).
