RENO, Nev. (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV volleyball pushed out to an early 1-set lead only to see the Nevada, Reno Wolf Pack rally with wins in the three subsequent stanzas en route to its 3-1 victory Thursday evening at the Virginia Street Gym. The Rebels (13-11 overall, 6-6 Mountain West) were paced by a career-best 23 kills from Bree Hammel, but that effort was not enough to keep the Wolf Pack (10-15, 5-8 MW) from winning the match by set scores of 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-21.
Not only did the win by the team from the northern portion of the Silver State snap UNLV's 13-match winning streak that began on Sept. 25, 2006 â€" a 3-0 Rebel win â€" in the head-to-head series, but it split the three points awarded for the sport in the 2015-16 Governor's Series presented by NV Energy and Barrick Gold. With each side gaining 1.5 points, UNLV maintains its three-point lead (7.5 to 4.5) in the all-encompassing athletic and academic challenge.
UNR outhit UNLV by 94 points (.280 to .196) with help from 11 more kills (66-55) and four fewer errors (21-25) off a slight advantage in attack attempts (161-153). The Wolf Pack, who committed no more than six errors in any set, hit between .217 (first set) and .326 (second) in the bout. The Rebels, on the other hand, put forth .213 (first), .211 (second) and .212 (third) hitting efficiencies before a .143 clip occurred in the fourth and final frame. Unfortunately, the Scarlet & Gray's highest error total (eight) came in the fourth after misfiring only five (second) or six times (first and third).
Hammel's 23 kills easily surpassed her previous best of 20 that she threw down against New Mexico last year (Nov. 6). She hit at a .354 clip with only six errors in 48 swings, which were also a career high. Additionally, she contributed five total blocks (one solo) and three digs.
Ceannia Kincade combined 14 kills with 11 digs for her second double-double of the season and 10th of her career. Kincade's five assists tied a career mark that was achieved earlier this season against UNM (Oct. 17).
Alexis Patterson dished out a team-high 42 assists to go along with seven digs, four kills and one assisted block.
Defensively, UNLV was paced by team highs in digs (19) by Carly Riehl and total blocks (six/one solo) by Ashley Owens.
The Wolf Pack had a trio register double-doubles in the affair. Madison Morell paired a match-best 25 kills with a team-high 14 kills for the feat. Morell's teammates Madison Foley (17 kills and 13 digs) and Taylar Rothfuss (51 assists and 13 digs) also had double-doubles.
UNLV stays out on the road with a stop in America's Finest City against the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday night at 6:00 pm. The Rebels return to Las Vegas for a pair at the Cox Pavilion next week on Nov. 12 (New Mexico) and 14 (Air Force).
