LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV softball team (20-20, 6-6 Mountain West) completed its three-game sweep of the Boise State Broncos (8-31, 0-9 MW) Wednesday afternoon with a 12-11, come-from-behind win in eight innings. In fact, the Rebels won the last two contests in walk-off fashion with Wednesday's coming to a close due to an RBI single by Emily Haslinger.
The Scarlet & Gray, who have won five straight, entered the home half of the eighth trailing by one after the Broncos capped off a stretch of seven unanswered runs between the sixth and eighth innings. Moments after BSU claimed its first lead of the affair off a sac fly by Kayla Clausen, UNLV's offense went to work.
The comeback was started by a fielding error by BSU's shortstop Sara Ketelsleger when she misplayed a ground ball put in play by pinch-hitter Jordan Swanner. Lexie McKinnon was then called upon to pinch run for Swanner, and she moved into scoring position on Garie Blando's sacrifice bunt. Fahren Glackin was then walked on four straight pitches by Nicole Wilson (1-6) to put runners on first and second with UNLV's 3-4 batters - Samantha Juarez and Emily Haslinger - looming. Those two teamed up for the game-tying and game-winning hits - singles - in the next two at-bats, respectively.
Juarez finished the affair with a 4-for-4 day at the plate with each hit going in the scorebook as a single. In all, she stepped up to the plate six times and reached twice via walks. She played a hand in five of UNLV's runs with three runs scored and a pair of RBI.
Alyssa Cordova, who was 2-for-5, had four RBI and scored once. Blando chipped in three runs and one RBI, while Haslinger knocked in three runners.
Morgan Ettinger got the start in the circle for UNLV and, just like game one of Tuesday's doubleheader, was a bit erratic in the first inning. Ettinger hit the first batter she faced before the Broncos were able to load the bases with a walk and another hit-by-pitch. Devin Bridges then delivered a two-run single to right-center to give her squad a 2-0 lead.
UNLV countered in the bottom of the first with three runs off of two hits. The first run scored when Haslinger was dealt a base on balls from Mackenzie McGill. The walk was the third by the hurler, who had also given up a single to Glackin. The Rebels scored twice more off a sacrifice fly by Jamie DePippo and an RBI single by Merina Ili.
The Rebels upped their lead to three runs, 5-2, with two scores off of one hit in the second. Brooke Stover led off with a walk that brought about a BSU pitching change and summoned Rachel Rodriguez in from the bullpen. Rodriguez immediately walked Blando before Glackin's sac bunt moved both runners up a base. Juarez and Haslinger brought the pair home when the former recorded a single to the latter's fielder's choice that forced a play at the plate.
After a scoreless third, the two teams combined for three runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth. In the fourth, BSU got a home run from Clausen, while the home side got a two-run homer from Cordova. One stanza later, Izzy Serrano notched an RBI single after Bridges' led off double only to be offset by a solo dinger by Blando and a two-run double by Cordova.
Trailing by six - 10-4 - entering the sixth, BSU was able to score six times between the sixth and seventh innings to force an extra frame. Hailey Torrez sparked the rally beginning in the sixth with an RBI off a fielder's choice moment before Bridges cranked a two-run homer over the scoreboard in left field. In the seventh, the Broncos were able to load the bases against Ettinger with a two-out double and two hit batsmen. UNLV went to the bullpen and brought Kwyn Cooper into the contest. Unfortunately, Cooper gave up an RBI single to Mackenzie Sullivan. She then forced Torrez to hit a ground ball to Blando at short, but the throw to first was wide of Haslinger and allowed two runners to score, including the game-tying tally.
Cooper (8-3) picked up the win in 1.1 innings of relief after Ettinger went 6.2 frames and allowed 10 runs (eight earned) off of 11 hits.
Wilson was tagged with the loss in three frames of relief. She surrendered two runs (one earned) off of four hits and two walks.
UNLV hits the road for six straight games with trips to Berkeley, Calif., and Reno, Nev. The Rebels will square off in a three-game series against the #20/20 California Golden Bears beginning Saturday (12:00 pm and 2:30 pm) and ending Sunday (12:00 pm).
