LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball program held its annual Scarlet & Gray Scrimmage Saturday night at the Cox Pavilion. The Gray, who won 3-1 behind set scores of 25-18, 12-25, 25-17, 25-20, maintained its winning ways in the intrasquad scrimmage with its fourth straight victory.
A trio of attackers with double-digit kill outputs led the Gray, including a team-best 17 kills from Bree Hammel, a 2014 Mountain West All-Conference and AVCA All-Pacific South Region Honorable Mention performer. The Las Vegas native hit at a .300 clip with only five errors in 40 total attempts. She also chipped in eight digs, one ace and one assisted block.
Ashley Owens owned a team-high .320 hitting efficiency backed by 11 kills against three errors in 25 swings. Owens fell one block short of recording a double-double, as she had nine total blocks (one solo).
Caitlin Wernentin pitched in 10 kills, as well, to round out the Gray's attack. Wernentin also contributed seven digs, four assisted blocks and one assist.
Natalie Bulen paced the Gray's offense with 34 assists, while Carly Riehl maintained the back row with a match-high 18 digs.
The Scarlet's Alyssa Wing recorded the contests only double-double behind a combination of a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs. Wing hit at a .371 clip (18-5-35) and also tallied three assists.
Ceannie Kincade amassed the best hitting efficiency in the match with a .444 display. Kincade threw down 15 kills and committed only three errors in 27 swings. She added eight digs, two assisted blocks and one assist.
Alexis Patterson, a 2014 All-MW selection, dished out a match-best 45 assists to go along with eight digs, three assisted blocks and four kills.
Madison Harper led the Scarlet's defense with 14 digs.
For the match, both sides hit at a .226 clip. Scarlet held advantages in all three offensive categories: kills (56-46), errors (25-18) and attempts (137-124). The Gray hit .333 or better in two of its four sets with a .344 showing in the third. The Scarlet, on the other hand, topped out at .562 (19-1-32) in the second.
The Rebels open up the 2015 campaign next weekend at home in their own UNLV Invitational (Aug. 28-29). UNLV will welcome Central Arkansas, Omaha and Seton Hall to town for the two-day event held in the Cox Pavilion. The first match for UNLV is at 6:00 pm Friday vs. Central Arkansas with bouts against Omaha (10:00 am) and Seton Hall (7:00 pm) taking place Saturday.
The Scarlet & Gray are coming off one of the best seasons in the program's history with a second-place showing in league play and, most notably, program bests in overall (26) and conference (14) victories.
