ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team returned to its winning ways Tuesday night with a 3-1 win over the New Mexico Lobos at the Johnson Center. The Rebels, who were led by Bree Hammel's double-double that consisted of a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs, claimed the contest over the Lobos by set scores of 25-16, 19-25, 32-30, 25-16.

With the victory, the Scarlet & Gray improved to 17-2 on the year and 6-1 in Mountain West play. The Cherry & Silver, on the other hand, saw its record fall to 10-10 while its Conference mark dropped to 1-6.

"What an intense match," exclaimed head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We came out so strong with good passing and hitting. In the second set, we just could not block and (New Mexico) took advantage of that. In the third, we showed so much toughness. We got such great hitting by Bree in sets three and four. Ashley (Owens) and Elsa (Descamps) kept their block honest and Elisa (Woinowsky), Laura (Butler) and Carly (Riehl) played awesome defense tonight."

The Rebels ran away with the opening stanza after breaking a 7-all stalemate with a 10-2 spurt that eventually grew to 18-9 run. The Lobos countered in the second after it won eight of the final 10 points after the 13th tie of the set occurred at 17-all. The third frame was a marathon that UNLV claimed after fighting off six set points and eventually winning off its third set-point chance. The fourth had six ties, but went in the Rebels' favor after it distanced themselves from the Lobos with a 17-8 run after an 8-all deadlock.

UNLV outhit UNM by 114 points (.257 to .143) with help from 12 more kills (60-48) off of a difference of one attack attempt (148-147). The Rebels committed 22 errors with 15 of those coming in the second and third sets alone; however, they only had three and four miscues in the first and fourth, respectively. The visitors hit .379 (14-3-29) in the opening frame and topped out in the fourth with a staggering .526 display (14-4-19). The Lobos misfired 27 times in the bout with at least seven errors taking place in the three sets they lost. The hosts displayed their best hitting in the second with a .324 ciip that came off 14 kills against three errors in 34 swings

Hammel paced the Rebel attack with the aforementioned 20 kills while the team got seven or more from four others. Alyssa Wing, like Hammel, hit double digits in kills with her 10, and she also added seven digs. Ashley Owens topped all hitters with a .538 hitting efficiency with nine kills. Elsa Descamps and Sadie Stutzman had eight kills apiece. The former chipped in two assists and two aces to go along with five total blocks (one solo) and two digs.

Alexis Patterson assisted on 51 assists -- three more than the amount of kills by the Lobos, and recorded two kills and two aces. Defensively, Patterson had five digs and two assisted blocks.

Elisa Woinowsky and Laura Butler notched 14 and 11 digs, respectively, to give the Rebels three players in double figures in the defensive category.

The Lobos got 15 kills from Devanne Sours and 13 more from Cassie House while the setting duties were split between Lise Rugland (23 assists) and Carson Heilborn (19). In the back row, Ashley Kelsey had a match-high 19 digs; Julia Warren had 13.

The Rebels stay out on the road for a match Saturday night (7:00 pm MT/6:00 pm PT) against the Utah State Aggies in Logan, Utah. The two-week trip continues with treks to Colorado Springs, Colorado and Boise, Idaho on October 20 and 22, respectively. UNLV returns to Las Vegas to face San Jose State on October 27 (6:00 pm) followed by Fresno State (3:00 pm) two days later.

NOTES: With help from her 20 kills, Hammel moved into eighth place in the program's career record book with 925.
