LARAMIE, Wyoming (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to the Wyoming Cowgirls Saturday afternoon at the UniWyo Sports Complex. With the loss â€" by set scores of 20-25, 15-25, 17-25, the Rebels fell to 21-5 on the year and 10-4 in Mountain West play. The Cowgirls, on the other hand, upped their overall mark to 17-9 while their Conference record improved to 10-3.
The Cowgirls outhit the Rebels by .174 points (.214 to .040), and, did so, with a five-kill advantage (36-31) and 12 fewer errors (15-27) despite attempting two fewer swings (98-100). The hosts threw down 12 kills in each set and hit between .250 (second) and .171 (first). The Rebels, who had a set-best .111 efficiency in the first, registered 12 kills in the first and 11 in the third, but only managed eight in the second, which resulted in a -.067 output.
"Our passing and serving went AWOL today," said head coach Cindy Fredrick. "We never got our offense in sync since our passes were all over the court."
Bree Hammel led the Rebels with seven kills while Sadie Stutzman and Ashley Owens had six apiece. Elsa Descamps added five kills and topped the team in total blocks with three (one solo). Hammel and Stutzman chipped in five and three digs, respectively.
Alexis Patterson dished out 26 assists and notched two kills, two digs and one assisted block.
Elisa Woinowsky registered a match-best 13 digs, and Laura Butler added five more.
Wyoming got a double-double from its setter Courtney Chacon who combined a match-high 31 digs with a team-best 10 digs for the feat. Laura Beach led all with 11 kills, and Reed Copeland followed closely behind with 10 of her own to go along with a match-high six total blocks (one solo).
By virtue of the win, Wyoming jumped ahead of UNLV in the MW standings and the two sit third (10-3/.769) and fourth (10-4/.714), respectively. Boise State sits in first place behind its 11-2 (.846) while Colorado State, which plays this evening against New Mexico, is second at 10-2 (.833).
The Scarlet & Gray returns to Las Vegas and the Cox Pavilion for a battle with Utah State on November 10 (6:00 pm). The Rebels will play three of their final four matches at home, and that includes the USU affair.
