SATURDAY'S PREVIEW...
Renewing the state's top sports rivalry, UNLV (3-8/1-6) football closes out its 2019 season with a trip to UNR (7-4/4-3) Saturday afternoon with the fabled Fremont Cannon on the line ... The winner will also come away with three points in the Silver State Series presented by IBEW and Nevada Donor Network (UNLV currently leads that competition 6-3) ...
Tony Sanchez comes in with a 2-2 mark in the series and a victory Saturday would make him only the third UNLV head coach to post more than two wins over the Pack (John Robinson 5-1 from 1999-2005, Tony Knap 3-1 from 1976-81) ... UNLV, which is looking to win its season finale in back-to-back years for the first time since 2002-03, just picked up its first Mountain West victory of the season last week, 38-35, at home over San Jose State while UNR won its third straight game, 35-28, at Fresno State ... Redshirt freshman QB and local product
Kenyon Oblad has played the last 30 quarters (minus two snaps) after
Armani Rogers got banged up at Wyoming ... Oblad's 1,852 passing yards rank fourth in program history by a freshman (and ninth in the nation among all current freshmen) while his 15 touchdowns sit third (tied for seventh in the nation). Oblad has thrown a touchdown pass in all seven of his starts and at least two scores in all but one game ... RB
Charles Williams, who was recently voted CoSIDA Academic All-District, continues to lead the Mountain West and is ranked 23rd in the nation with 1,119 net rushing yards. Including a career-high 186 last week vs. SJSU, the "Chuck Wagon" is second among all conference players with five 100-yard games in 2019 ... LB
Javin White is tied for sixth at UNLV with nine career interceptions, which also ranks him sixth among all active FBS players. He also sits third in school history with seven forced fumbles ... UNLV's defense has forced eight turnovers the last two weeks after only grabbing a combined six in the first nine games.
REBELS vs. WOLF PACK NOTES...Â
After last year's 34-29 UNLV win in Las Vegas, a game that featured the largest comeback in Rebel history (trailed 23-0 in the first half), UNR still holds a 26-18 lead in the series ... The 44 meetings, which include 30 straight years in a rivalry that permanently became an annual event in 1989, are by far the most UNLV has had with any opponent ... Second-year secondary coach David Lockwood spent the 2017 season on
Tony Sanchez's staff.
