LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – UNLV freshman quarterback Kenyon Oblad has been named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.
The first Rebel to earn the honor on the offensive side since fellow-QB Armani Rogers on Nov. 20, 2017, Oblad is a local product from Liberty High School. He ranks third in the conference with 18 touchdown passes and on Saturday broke the school record for completion percentage by a freshman in a game (72.7%) during a 33-30 overtime victory at UNR.
Oblad completed 13 of his first 14 attempts, including touchdown passes of 32 yards to Mekhi Stevenson and 75 yards to Steve Jenkins. After the Wolf Pack took their first lead of the game in overtime, Oblad completed all three of his pass attempts in OT, including the game-winner to Jenkins from 19 yards out that led to UNLV retaining bragging rights to the famed Fremont Cannon. Overall, Oblad finished the day 16-of-22 for 229 yards, three touchdowns and zero turnovers.
Oblad joins former punter Logan Yunker (2013 and 2015) out of Arbor View High School, kicker Nolan Kohorst (2013) from Green Valley HS, kick returner Marcus Sullivan (2010) from Cheyenne HS and All-American safety Jamaal Brimmer (2002, '03, '04) from Durango HS as Southern Nevada products to win a MW weekly award since the league kicked off in 1999.
This marked the third and final MW Player of the Week nod for UNLV this season as cornerback Jericho Flowers won last week and linebacker Javin White was named October 14. The trio of honorees marked the most for the program since earning the same amount in 2016.
