LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV volleyball program officially closed out their 2022 fall signees with Jhenna Gabriel, head coach Dawn Sullivan announced Tuesday.
Gabriel, who was originally set to be the newest UNLV volleyball volunteer assistant coach, has come out of retirement to close out her collegiate playing career with the Rebels this season.
Jhenna is a 5-8 setter out of Honolulu, Hawai'i, transferring from Texas. During her time with the Longhorns, Gabriel earned the 2020 Big 12 Setter of the Year title, was a member of the 2020 All-Big 12 First Team and the AVCA All-America Third Team, named to the 2019 AVCA All-Southwest Region and All-Big 12 Second Team and earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week during her freshman season in 2018. The Honolulu native played in a total of 112 matches, accumulated 3491 assists (9.26 assists per set), 632 digs and 60 service aces. During her senior season, she led the Big-12 with 11.32 assists per set, 1155 total assists, and led Texas to a .334 hitting percentage, the third best in the NCAA during the season. Gabriel had a career-high 58 assists on two occasions and had a career-high 18 digs to go with 55 assists in the NCAA Tournament match against Penn State.
The 2018 graduate of Maryknoll High School lettered in volleyball and was named All-League and All-State all four years. She helped the 2017 Rainbow Volleyball Club to a 22nd place finish at the AAU 18U National Championships and was selected to the A1 Team. She also placed 17th in Open at the 2016 AAU National Championships, took third in 2015 and won the 2014 AAU Volleyball Festival National Championship.
