LAS VEGAS - UNLV (0-1) lost its first match of the 2006 season with a 3-2 defeat to Cal Poly (1-0) in the Rebels' own UNLV Classic held at the Cox Pavilion tonight. The Rebels jumped out to a 2-0 advantage only to watch the Mustangs fight off a match loss by winning games three and four and the 15-point game-five tiebreaker. Cal Poly took the match with game scores of 27-30, 24-30, 30-25, 30-19, 15-11.
UNLV hit .170 for the match, while Cal Poly hit .207. The Mustangs racked up 68 kills to the Rebels' 65.
Melody Nua, Brittani Lumsden, Michelle Banks and Maria Aladjova tallied double-doubles for UNLV. Aladjova led the Rebels with 16 kills and pitched in 13 digs, which tied a career high. Banks followed closely behind with her 12 kills and 12 digs. Lumsden notched 11 kills, while having a team and career high 22 digs. Nua set 51 assists and dug out 13 Mustang attacks.
The Mustangs had two players with double-doubles, as well. Alicia Waller had a match-high 23 kills and tied for the team-lead with 20 digs. Chelsea Hayes had a match-high 62 assists, while stopping 11 Rebel attacks. Kylie Atherstone was second on the Mustangs with 20 kills. Kristin Jackson tied Waller for the team-lead in digs with 20.
Next up for the Rebels is a 12:00 pm (noon) match versus Oral Roberts (0-1). UNLV follows that match up with its second of the day at 7 pm against Oregon State (1-0). There are two more matches scheduled for the final day of the UNLV Classic with Cal Poly and Oregon State at 10 am and Oral Roberts vs. Cal Poly at 4:30 pm.
